Josh Depew Pickleball Tournament Kicks Off in Montgomery

Montgomery is buzzing with excitement as the first-ever Josh Depew Pickleball Tournament unfolds, bringing together enthusiasts and first-timers in a lively celebration of the sport. Held at the Montgomery Senior Center, the tournament marks a new chapter for the local community, fostering both competition and camaraderie.

The tournament, named after local pickleball champion Josh Depew, drew a diverse crowd of participants. From seasoned players to curious newcomers, the event offered a unique opportunity to experience the fast-growing sport. With the sounds of paddles striking balls echoing through the courts, the tournament was a testament to the sport’s increasing popularity.

Beyond pickleball, Montgomery’s Senior Center has an array of engaging activities lined up. The Book Club meets on July 17 at 10 a.m. to discuss “Olive Kitteridge” and “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.” Open to all, this gathering promises rich discussions and community bonding. For those eyeing a bit of adventure, the Greece Island Hopper Trip presentation on July 24 at 1 p.m. is a must-attend. And, don’t miss the Oktoberfest Wedding of Freida & Fritz Show on October 24 at the Riverview Inn for just $50 per person.

Book lovers are in for a treat with the Montgomery Book Exchange’s quarterly bag sale from July 18-21. Fill a reusable bag with books under $8 for only $10 at their main store on 84 Clinton Street. Over at the Children’s Chapter on 8 Factory Street, fill a bag with any books for the same price. This sale is perfect for stocking up on summer reads at a bargain.

Seniors needing transportation for medical appointments or shopping can rely on the Senior bus, which makes scheduled trips outside the town. It also runs twice a month to medical facilities in Middletown. For reservations, call the Transportation Department at (845) 457-2622 from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. A $1 donation each way is suggested.

With the summer heat in full swing, pet owners are reminded to be cautious. If the pavement is too hot for bare feet, it’s too hot for paws. Recently, a festival-goer was seen with a cat in a black pet backpack in 90-degree weather. Let’s keep our furry friends safe by leaving them at home during extreme heat.

The Village of Montgomery Summer Concert Series is another highlight, offering free live music at the Downtown Bandstand on Clinton Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On July 18, enjoy the tunes of Troubled Souls, followed by The Jon Bates Band on July 25.
